Review of Prozac Nation (2003) by Afrodan J — 18 May 2008
Im a bit of a fan of Christina Ricci ever since I saw her in the Adams Family with her lil' pig-tails and gothic display. I dunno, something about her odd shaped head and Manga eyes makes me all jolly inside.
This film is just as weird as Christina's face, about a journalist who goes to uni and opens the door to drugs, sex and rock n roll. Her performance is exceptional along with Jessica Lange who plays her mother. As brilliant as this film was it is one of those great films that are a drag to watch and you kinda just want the damn thing to end. This may have been due to the harsh portrayal of the characters downward spiral journey which leaves you in a depressed and moody....erm...mood. I was shocked by the power the story had on me...I wanted to slap a baby, and there is never a reason to slap a baby.
As good of a story as it was I felt the direction was wrong, it almost felt like this was highlights of a really good film because it moved really fast from one stage to another and keeping up with her mood swings was as annoying as Spanish subtitles embedded on an English movie. Overall a very good film, worth the watch for anyone totally in control of their own mood swings, now if you'll excuse me, writing this has put me right back in the state of mind I was in watching the thing, im gonna slap a baby!
