Review of Proof (1991) by Andy S — 04 Jul 2008
I once read a book by C.S. Lewis entitled, "Till we have Faces." It's an interesting retailing of a myth and the friend who lent me the book found it deeply impacting at a level "below the narrative.
" By the book's end, I hated it . . . not because it was a particularly bad novel, but because I couldn't access this "below" level. It made me feel a bit foolish because I couldn't dent that "deeper" sphere.
By the end "Proof", I felt very much the same way. I could tell the film was saying something below the narrative, but for the life of me I couldn't discern it. I liked the story well enough and the acting is engaging, but I left the film feeling frustrated because I wanted to "get it" (and I did feel like there was something to be gotten) and I failed.
Granted, whether this is my fault or the filmmakers is up for debate.
