Review of Proof (1991) by Steven L — 10 Jan 2010
I really enjoyed this movie. It is by no means fast paced but instead brilliantly jumps between past and present in such a way that I find it hard to imagine exactly how it was originally performed for the stage in London.
It explores the fears of a young woman who tries to stave off the deterioration of her mind which she had to witness her father suffer through himself... Her mind, like his had been, being so valuable in who they are as mathmeticians at their core. Performances were really very good and the casting was spot-on. The sister character may have seemed over the top unless you have had the displeasure of knowing someone EXACTLY LIKE HER yourself. :).
The movie unfolds similarly to the way a mathmatical proof might be achieved. Pieces start to fit together and then a sort of an "aha" moment which is really quite sad and perfectly executed. The movie does leave a realistic ending intact and refers back to the title which holds more than one meaning.
I'd recommend it but only to those who enjoy character-driven plots and maybe a little sadness in a movie. It would not be for someone who is looking for anything thrilling or 'edge of your seat' at all.
