Review of Proof (1991) by Daniel A — 18 Mar 2012
Despite being miscast (Paltrow is too old to play mid-twenties, Gyllenhaal is too sexy to play a maths nerd, and both are an ill-fitting romantic pairing) Proof still brings some weight to its overwrought presentation of a grief-stricken bipolar mathematics genius.
Anthony Hopkins provides the film's highlight in his playful performance, while Paltrow convinces when not held back by the constraints of her character. Meanwhile the mystery element of the story holds some credence but all in all this one won't stick around in your mind for too long after the credits roll.
