Review of Promising Young Woman (2020) by Umaumai — 18 May 2021
I'm not sure if I could recommend this movie to anyone because of the subject matter, but I must say that it was handled in a unique, albeit dark, way that created a really memorable film. There are many flawed characters in this morality tale and I felt as a viewer that it was somewhat heavy handed.
We are a bit too omniscient the way that the plot is unfolded to us and because of that there are many plot points you can see coming. I will say that it is also really worth exploring these stories now as it resounds just as heavy in the current climate of the "me too" era.
For the most part it was shockingly refreshing to see people get their comeuppance through out this sudo thriller/revenge story, but for me that's where any enjoyment ends. I'm not sure that we're supposed to like, or even fully relate to, anyone in this sorry.
Still, I like the main character's strength and resolve. It was a testament to the excellent acting that was on display the entire movie. My last bit of praise goes to the score. Whoever made the choices for what pop songs, down the the decision to do a string quartet orchestration arrangement of "Toxic," did a really great job.
I'm not typically taken in by song score and I'm not a fan of most pop music, but this score/soundtrack really set the movie perfectly.
