Promised Land walks right on the fine line between an engrossing look at energy businesses' effect on humanity and earnest preachiness, but Van Sant directs the film with a grayish area that helps understand multiple perspectives around the story.
The final act also provides an unsuspecting twist that is unique for the small town drama.
