Review of Prom Night (2011) by Richard W — 13 Jul 2009
If there was ever a horror film that followed the mythical book of "How to make a horror movie" this is it! This film uses EVERY single known cliche in the filmaking world to achieve scares at it's core story.
We kick off with an emotionless maniac slaughtering a pretty girl's family, why? I have no idea and I don't really care. Then 20 minutes of yawn-inducing story plods along until we get into a slightly warm pool of suspense as we see the same nut-case in the same hotel that is hosting the classic American childish 'Prom'. One question I asked at this point was how come nobody's suspicion was raised throughout the whole film when the murdered was often standing in the hotel lobby staring rather angrily at women wearing a baseball cap, leaning against or behind stone pillars in a sneaky posture?
I have to be honest, the film did get interesting as the psycho was using the maid's master key to access the hotel rooms and sneaking around. If only the producers cut out the pointless and lifelessly boring chit-chat from the sacrificial lambs we call the cast.
When the film does decide to fire up, every cliche from other horror movies is used in this one. I could tell who was going to be the next victim 10 minutes before it happened!
This film could've been a lot better if the producers didn't patronise the audience or think of us as idiots, then they would have made a much more satisfying film.
