Review of Prom Night (2011) by Calum P — 31 Mar 2010
I saw this film on my sister's 13th because she wanted to go see Superhero Movie and I had no interest in it, so went to see Prom Night and it was a total blast.
The story revolves around Donna, a girl in her senior year, who's been traumatized by a former teacher she had 3 years ago, who went crazy and did something terrible to her. She lives with her aunt and uncle now, and on Prom Night, everything seems perfect, as if nothing can go wrong. Then, they get word that Donna's stalker has escaped from his insane asylum 300 miles away, but will stop at nothing to get to her. He ends up turning her night of fun into a night of horror.
Now, you've read the bad reviews, heard angry people say it sucked, and looked at the ridiculous rating people have given "Prom Night".
The movie is aimed at teenagers so adults won't like it. It's like sitting a bunch of old women in a cinema to review Cloverfield. They aren't gonna like it.
The acting in this film is wonderful, especially by Brittany Snow. She gave a truly good performance, as she usually does. The side characters (Donna's friends) are not half bad, either. In fact, I actually cared about them, and didn't want them to die. I really felt bad for them.
Scary? Not terrifying, much more of a thriller. There are a lot of jump scenes, and the killer is down right creepy. Very disturbing guy.
So, what I'm getting at is the film is not bad at all. This is the world we live in, where movie reviewers think all movies are aimed at them. Think of a horror movie you liked as a teenager, and was slaughtered by the press. It doesn't even have to be a horror movie, just any movie in general. People need to learn movies are made for different reasons and different people. Not everything's for you.
