Review of Project Nim (2011) by Daniel B — 21 Jul 2011
Project Nim is a poignantly emotional documentary that challenges many socio-cultural taboos, ethical and moral values, and while attempting to address the fundamental question of nature vs nurture. Can our genetically closest relative in the animal kingdom, the chimpanzee, become a human being or at least socio-culturally assimilated if it is raised within a human family and taught sign language? How do very intimate interactions with a chimp change our understanding of what it means to be human, a mother, a sibling, and what our relationship is to other members of the animal kingdom? You will laugh and cry many a tear throughout this 90 film and, perhaps, never want to see a primate in captivity again.
