Review of Project Nim (2011) by Marta R — 26 Jun 2013
In the 1970's a Columbia professor arranged an experiment. Can a chimp be taught human sign language if it is taken at infancy and raised in a human family?
This is only barely a story about the experiment. It is about the way an experiment such as this will affect the life of its subject, and the lives of the experimenters. Like any good story, it goes in many unexpected dimensions, some touching and some quite dark. There are so many settings and changes that tt seems almost epic in its 99 minutes.
This was directed by James Marsh who created the engaging thriller-documentary "Man On Wire" about the successful effort of Roland Petit to cross between NYC's Twin Towers on a high wire. Project Nim is even better. It has greater scope, and will make you think about the unalterable similarities and differences between humans and animals, and the dangers of blurring the line between them.
