Review of Project Nim (2011) by Davey M — 05 Feb 2012
Marsh is a tremendous non-fiction storyteller, and "Project Nim" is entertaining, sweet, and very moving, with compelling characters and one of the most exciting stories of the year. And, like his last film, "Man on Wire," it explores some ideologically fascinating and frequently troubling territory, in this case, the nature of communication and the relationship between humans and animals--our differences and similarities--and, like Marsh's last film, it leaves some of the most challenging questions largely unanswered (sometimes even unasked).
Nim was treated poorly, but his story ends as happily as it could--but what of the other chimpanzees (and animals of all other kinds of species) who are tested and mistreated for our benefit?
