Review of Project Nim (2011) by Thomas W — 14 Feb 2012
Fascinating. Heartbreaking. Haunting. Project NIM is the story of a newborn chimpanzee, Nim, plucked from his fearful mother's breast mere days after birth to undergo a groundbreaking social experiment involving communication and/or language development between chimpanzees and humans (meaning THEY learn OUR language .
.. not vice versa). The experiment occured in the 1970's as Nim was taken from an Oklahoma "sanctuary" (not) and sent to live on the Upper East Side of New York with an affluent family who willingly took him in to nuture and love as one of their own.
While admirable on the parts of some involved ... the film allows for anybody with any common season who can reason to figure out a chimapanzee isn't a human and won't become one. Some truly do want the "best" for their dear Nim; but others appear to be in it for the hyped noteriety the experiment brought about.
I think the Academy missed the mark with this documentary too as it is a definite snub as it was one of the better, more compelling docs I have seen this past year. I'm sorry Nim ... and I am so ashamed.
