Review of Project Almanac (2015) by Aaron D — 08 Feb 2015
I left the theater with more questions than answers. How do you have a musical montage in a found footage film? How do you keep traveling back to the same time over and over again without running into alternate versions of yourself.
Why would anyone who tested time travel with a toy car that ended up fused to a wall decide that now they could test it on people. And the lead character is supposedly some sort of genius. Could there be any more project placement? Now that I got the problems I had with the time travel, found footage, character behavior, and marketing issues out of the way, here are the good things.
I liked that we had an attempt to move the found footage style on to other genres aside from horror. I found that figuring out the logic of how past events can alter future events when time travelling interesting to me, though it has been done many times before.
The discussions I had afterwords are fascinating. The movie was relatively fun. Do the bad parts take me out of the movie more than the good parts draw me in? The answer, is unfortunately yes. Full disclaimer: I fell asleep for about half an hour mid-way through the movie, and woke up with about 10 minutes left.
