Here's an original idea for a movie. A found footage movie about a group of teenagers who invent a time machine. "Project Almanac" is the latest failure for this genre. It has irritating shaky camerawork and characters who I didn't care about. Look Hollywood, I know found footage movies make a lot of money but they are now tiresome and boring.
"Project Almanac" is about an aspiring inventor named David Raskin (Jonny Weston) and his plan to build a time machine.
David gets admitted into MIT but he doesn't have the money for it. One day, he looks into his late father's basement and discovers instructions on how to build a time machine. David and a group friends try out the machine and the results are stunning. They can now know which numbers to choose from on the lottery, drive an expensive car, get good marks on their classes and go to concerts.
David also uses the machine to go out with Jessie Pierce (Sofia Black D'Elia), his longtime crush. Soon, the kids travel into dangerous territory because the time machine has created ripple effects all around them. The star basketball player at their school gets involved in a car crash which causes his team to lose the championship and a plane piloted by the father of one of David's classmates crashes to the ground killing 77 people.
Sure, this idea is intriguing but it would have been better if it had characters who I cared about. "Project Almanac" is such a teen-boy fantasy that it could have been produced by Michael Bay, what do you know! He did make this found footage thriller. Bay and director Dean Israelite should've traveled back in time and made a better movie.
