Review of Prisoners (2013) by Sandy K — 25 Apr 2014
When their young daughters disappear without a trace, two neighborhood families struggle to find them. Keller, one of the fathers (played with intensity by Hugh Jackman), is a rough-edged survivalist determined to find his own solutions when the police release the only suspect, a man with the IQ of a child (Paul Dano).
Each passing day adds to the parents' desperation and grief, so it comes as no surprise when a man of Keller's temperament bypasses the beleaguered detective on the case (Jake Gyllenhaal) to get his own answers from the suspect.
Although much too long (over 2 1/2 hours!), the mystery is well drawn with breath-taking twists. Ultimately it is a chilling examination of what is justifiable in the defense of a child, and all the different ways one can become a "prisoner.
