Review of Prisoners (2013) by Phillip V — 13 Jul 2014
On the surface, Prisoners is a child abduction movie with all the usual elements: distraught parents looking mourning their lost children, police detectives searching for answers as the clock ticks, and a creepy antagonist with an immoral purpose for kidnapping children.
Digging deeper, the film is about morality and the loss of morality when tragedy strikes. The mystery keeps you guessing until the end the reveal is far less shocking as the transformation each character undergoes.
The film is disturbing, but not so disturbing that it's inaccessible. Instead, the film digs under your skin and tries to include you in the suffering the parents are going through. You want answers not because you're curious about the outcome, but because you genuinely want to see the conflict resolved.
Everyone is excellent in term of performance and the film is well written. There are a few scenes I thought could have been executed better, but for the most part the film is exceptional. I would recommend watching it, but I'll only sit through it once.
