Review of Prince of Darkness (1987) by Willem W — 20 Nov 2007
I'll argue that if there's one thing I sometimes don't 'get' in John Carpenter's body of work is how slack the pace of some of his films are. Maybe in theatres, there's a slow-burn build that creates a sense of impending doom.
This film, which I've only seen on DVD, feels a tad.. leisurely to me. However, what it lacks in pace, it more than makes up for in genuinely unsettling imagery and an outstanding ending. Carpenter knows when to show the gore, and when to hold back and let your imagination play tricks on you.
For my moneyk, he's one director I'd love to split a joint and a bottle of tequilla with.
