Review of Prince of Darkness (1987) by Sean S — 14 Nov 2012
Prince of Darkness is primarily surprising because of its off-the-wall style of horror, especially from the innovative and acclaimed director of horror classics Halloween (1978) and The Thing (1982). It's a little brutal and a little like things that came before (almost seeming Suspiria-like in certain parts), but the film stands apart with some truly stark and doom-dark visuals.
The plot about anti-matter and the Anti-Christ is quite muddled and drags this relatively short exercise down, though. However, part of the film's mystique lies in its unexplained (is the mirror Brian goes to touch solid? The film ends before we can see) and at times random actions (Dennis Dun's character's implied/joked-about homosexuality notwithstanding).
