Review of Prince of Darkness (1987) by Jon C — 03 Oct 2014
Weird, unique and underrated John Carpenter flick from the late 80's, it's a little meandering here and there and overloads on constant heavy handed exposition but has such an intriguing concept, taking religious horror into the realm of science fiction, blending the two in a completely fucking bonkers stew were Satan is a green fluid trapped in a 7 million year old vile, a pigeon is crucified, a time travelling video signal from the future foretelling the Apocalypse invades peoples collective dreams and Alice Cooper is a possessed hobo.
It's plain to see why the film failed at the box office in 87 and why it still has something of a mixed reputation, but this second part of Carpenters self described "Apocalypse trilogy" (proceeded by The Thing, followed by In The Mouth Of Madness) is a hidden gem for horror fans, full of surreal, nightmare imagery, real creepiness and the pleasure of having Big Trouble in Little China's Victor Wong and Halloween's Donald Pleasence share the screen together, basically Eg Shen and Dr Sam Loomis in a film together, whats not to love?
