Review of Primeval (2007) by Stephen V — 09 Jul 2007
Umm... ok, obviously this movie is (very) loosely based on reality. I mean really... a crocodile that is bigger than a truck eating hundreds of people... hmm.
King Kong is based on a true story in that people went to islands and saw gorilla's haha. Besides, it is supposed to be a monster movie about a giant crocodile, but the crocodile actually shows up rarely and plays second fiddle to the various battles between human characters.
As for the political content... all it tells people is that A: A war existed in Burundi B: Wars are violent and people die. Big news.
It didn't explain why there was a war. It didn't provide any analysis. All it did was state that a war happened and it was unpleasant. It also somewhat chose a side to support in the war (in making the Hutu rebels look very evil). I don't know enough about that conflict, but somehow I doubt that is a deep analysis, nor conductive to progress.
A couple thought provoking lines from the African character from the U.S. about black on black violence etc. but ultimately he then ends up saying some pretty crazy stuff including "slavery was a good thing". Which personally, I didn't find super funny although it seemed like it was meant to be.
