Review of Primer (2004) by Dj J — 10 Nov 2010
The ideas that this movie represents are quite interesting and the Carruth's take on time travel is unique and inovative. However, this film is way too confusing and convoluted. I watched it once, read numerous online message board posts that attempted to explain the movie, watched it one more time, and after that I figured out just enough to figure out what was going.
And I'm not a casual movie goer who can't concentrate on a movie if there are no explosions. I love movies that make you think, but this goes unneccesarily too far. I've seen Inception. I pretty much understood it after just one viewing.
If you are confused by Inception, don't even attempt to watch this movie. This movie is impressive, considering its budget, but I feel that Carruth unneccesarily complicates the narration of the story to make up for the low budget and tries to make a confusing movie because so many people value that.
Making a movie hard to understand does not neccessarily make it good; it depends on the story. This movie could've been made a lot clearer and understandable.
