Review of Primary Colors (1998) by Tristan R — 28 Feb 2008
A very erratic perfomance from Travolta colours (sorry) a rather enjoyable movie.
Although admittedly brilliant in parts, Travolta's Clinton too often descends into comedic charismatic cartoon caddishness to fully realise Bill Clinton.
True to the book, the film moves along entertainingly giving rare (pre West Wing) insight into the processes and dramas of a presidential campaign.
Often overlooked is the fact that the Clinton White House saw a massive glut of fun films about or relating to the West Wing like this or the American President while the Bush years merely gave birth to a array of increasingly motified documentaries about the grim facts of the current (the clock is ticking) administration.
Primary Colors reminds us of a happier time when leaders didnt inhale and cigars had more than one use.
