Review of Primary Colors (1998) by Muhammad A — 01 Aug 2008
Based on Joe Klein's Clinton '92 roman-a-clef, the film is marred by its lack of nuance and tone deafness. Most people feel obliged to praise Kathy Bates's turn as Libby Holden since she got an oscar nomination for it, but hers is the least convincing (save for the last few scenes) in a contest of poor performances.
Travolta is the only person who delivers, though he often fails to muster enough gravitas with his hurried execution. Also the dynamics of the successes and failures are not sufficiently emphasized and as a result the film fails to generate the necessary tension or resolution.
An entertaining film nevertheless.
