Review of Priest (2011) by Jacob S — 23 Dec 2011
I liked this movie, but most of the concepts and ideas are heavily inspired by movies like Judge Dredd, Matrix, Blade Runner and so on. The originality are therefore not spectacular and pulls the movie down.
The directing is well executed and the cinematography and design is impressive, a huge plus. Poul Bettany does a good job in the leading role, but Karl Urban's part does not reflect his considerable skills as an actor and he feels a bit misplaced.
The vampires are a bit more demon-like and much scarier than the laughable kind from "Twilight" and the like. The action is pretty good and the weapons and props are well designed. The overall problem is the lack of originality but its hard to come up with new ideas these days.
If you forget about that and see the movie for what it is, then you will see a solid post-apocalyptic-sci-fi-vampire killer action flick which is above average for the genre.
