Review of Priest (2011) by Justin F — 08 Oct 2011
Whilst I enjoyed Priest I was left with an overwhelming feeling of an opportunity missed. It reminded me of how I felt a similar feeling after watching I Am Legend. I also thought that it borrowed a little from Equilibrium especially with the settings.
First, the positives. It looks good, has style, good effects, decent fight scenes and really cool bikes that they steam around on. Paul Bettany is good though some may feel his role in this is all too similar to that which he played in The Da Vinci Code. Ive always thought of him as more an English gent such as his roles in A Beautiful Mind and the excellent Master And Commander.
On the downside at 87 minutes the film is nowhere near long enough for either the characters or story to develop in a satisfactory way. The bad guy in the form of Black Hat (Karl Urban) is sorely under used and the lawman Hicks (Gigandet) annoyed me more than a little.
Maybe any potential sequels will make better use of the positive aspects than this one did?
