Review of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016) by Jerome K — 05 Mar 2016
Jane Austen's classic tale of romance gets a satiric horror twist in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. The story follow a group of sisters who train to be warriors while also dealing with matters of love; meanwhile zombie hordes lay siege to London and roam the English countryside.
Though based on Seth Grahame-Smith's adapted novel, the film deviates greatly; attempting to be more of a standard zombie film. Lily James is extraordinarily good as Elizabeth Bennet, and brings a lot of charisma to the role.
Sam Riley as Mr. Darcy on the other hand, is rather lackluster; which is in part due to bad writing, as the character and his backstory are extensively changed. Still, the zombie attacks and battles bring a lot of excitement to the film, and the makeup effects are quite gruesome.
While it has some problems, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is irreverently fun and delivers plenty of thrills.
