Review of Pride (2014) by Alan W — 10 Sep 2014
History lesson wrapped up as a typical Britcom you'll expect after the likes of Full Monty or Made in Dagenham, this is surprisingly well thought out and crafted. Despite some inevitable predictability in the story lines (more forgivable in this instance for the clever and intricate ways they have interwoven them together), this is mainstream enough to appeal to the masses without alienating the more unique, almost niched, market this is equally aimed for.
Not only do we get a moving and educational account of the struggles faced by the Welsh miners back in the 80s but also that of the gay movement at the same time. Two struggles for the price of one, indeed.
Great performances all round from an ensemble composing of a who's who in Britcom casting and a script that feels genuine, emotional and not tokenistic despite the wide ranging number of issues it managed to touch on.
It could have gone very wrong, yet the outcome here is pleasingly satisfying without being patronising or trivial - and that is something that doesn't often come by these days.
