First, it is emotive. Not for the gay theme so much as for solidarity and history. As an American living in the UK, I still see regular reminders of Thatcherism and the miners' strike and the knock-on effects.
And I know people who've seen the Pride transition from demonstration to parade. "...then they came for the trade unionists ..." Martin Niemöller. Oh, and it is funny.
