Review of Pride (2014) by Maria J — 15 Sep 2014
Deserving of its 90% audience rating, I came out of this movie humming "Shame on you! If you can't dance too!", grinning ear to ear and feeling the healing relief that comes after having a good cry. A cry that feels supported within the movie.
If you have any memories of the 80s, whether in the UK or abroad, of the bleakness of remote towns, of being middle-class during those times then the movie also holds up a comforting mirror.
But it was the movie's title which left the strongest impression on me. In a touching scene between two young characters, one urges the other to not run away but leave a difficult situation, but on his own terms, with a sense of Pride.
Politically, we know how the story ends for the miners. But that sense of solidarity, of coming together and doing it in one's own terms stayed with me.
