Review of Pride (2014) by Graham B — 17 Sep 2014
During a pride march in 1984 a group of gay men form Lesbian and Gay Men Supporting Minors to raise money for the striking union. When their money is turned down by the union, they decide to send it to a small mining village in Wales. After some initial hostility, the village and the gay group form a strong bond of friendship and solidarity.
Based on a little known true story, this social political comedy is very reminiscent of the likes of The Full Monty and Billy Elliot. Though not quite as good as those films, it does wear the politics well without being too earnest and sentimental.
Very much an ensemble piece, the cast does great justice to a wisecracking script resulting in a great crowd pleasing film. Joyously uplifting, emotionally resonant and a fun time at the movies.
