Review of Pride (2014) by Bethany C — 27 Jun 2015
A heartwarming movie if I've ever seen one. I found myself laughing and crying in turns. While I do think it was disappointing that it pinkwashed and sanitized the fight for gay rights in the 80s, and didn't truly approach other topics important in the day (such as AIDS and police violence), I do think it's a film that's truly representative of the constant struggle of civil rights activists: how important it is to work for ALL rights, not just yours.
Each character was well-filled out and real. Despite the pinkwashing and sanitizing, it was a thoroughly enjoyable movie that everyone should watch. I also did like that there was no bullshit romantic love triangle, despite the fact that I expected one. It was a historical film that honored the point of a historical film: to tell history, not to add a love triangle.
