Review of Pride (2007) by Alex P — 01 Sep 2007
I FINALLY got to see this movie yesterday, and loved it. Being a swimmer I supposed there is a potential for bias but I'll review it to the best of my abilities. Terrance Howard plays a very solid and believable character, this is strengthened by the scene where his pool is desecrated and he assaults the enemy, nearly drowning the boss, he shows that he his only human. Bernie Mac was an interesting choice for the Rec overseer, he develops similarly to Howard throughout the film. While the film is quite predictable, it does not detract from its inspiration and message. One weakness of the film is apparent to most of my fellow swimmers in that, the physique of the athletes is far too muscular and they appear to be far too in shape to swim so poorly at the beginning, even though swimming does have a steep learning curve.
I have seen my peers compare this movie to Remember the Titans, yes they both deal with racism, but Titans deals more with unification and trying to put aside differences to become one soul, while Pride deals with just trying to basic human to human respect.
I give this movie four stars.
We need to have some more swimming movies. I only know of one other presently.
