Review of Pretty Woman (1991) by David L — 02 Feb 2014
This has got pretty much everything - a fairytale storyline, a decent soundtrack, a comical script, and a wealth of talent and entertainment. Albeit unlikely that one would ever find someone as glamorous as Julia Roberts working the streets of America to earn a buck or two, it just so happens that Richard Gere happens to be that man, despite working at the opposite end of the spectrum.
Fascinated by how the other lives, and how much they actually have in common (like screwing guys for money) what starts off as an impossible relationship soon turns into love when they realise that despite their differences, they can't bear to separate.
It's intriguing how an innocent request for directions soon turns from a one night stand, to a one week stand, and on to a lifetime stand. The reality of just how such a hooker would be treated in the rich environment has been captured perfectly, as well as the comical genius surrounding how she is unable to acquit herself with the manners required at first.
It very much sparks a trend of the comical romance scripts that filled the 90's but this stands out due to its originality and the fact that it's about the only one Hugh Grant didn't star in! It's very repeatable, a breath of fresh air, and something any generation can enjoy - A classic love story!
