Review of Pretty Woman (1991) by Brett H — 03 Apr 2015
Finally got around to seeing this classic love story that is a complete fairytale and unrealistic on all fronts, but it has a charm to it thanks to the brilliant pairing of Richard Gere and Julia Roberts.
This was Gere's comeback after having a string of duds, but it's Julia Roberts who steals the film with an oscar-nominated performance as a sassy, but naive prostitute who changes her life around.
The set-up to the love-story is believable enough, but then it goes a bit ridiculous with the hotel staff helping her act/dress like a lady and the whole situation is a total fantasy that never would've happened if the character didn't look like JULIA ROBERTS.
Gary Marshall is great at bringing on the romance, but luckily the film never feels like a cliche and there are at least four classic scenes that have stood the test of time. A feel-good, date-movie that is charming, witty, and worth a watch!
