Review of Predestination (2013) by Daniel L — 23 Jan 2015
This is a January movie that doesn't suck.
Predestination comes from the spierig brothers, the directors of the highly underrated Daybreakers. When I first heard of the movie I got very interested in checking it out. Thankfully, unlike most of the movies released in January, predestination isn't trash, its pretty damn amazing. Describing the plot is very hard to do since its very complex but that's one of the things I love about this movie. The movie goes places where you don't expect. The movie kind of plays on the chicken or egg theory in a smart way but I'm not going to talk about the plot more. Its no surprise that Ethan Hawke is great here, he's always great but the standout of this movie is Sarah Snook, this is really a fantastic breakout role, when she comes on screen that's the only thing you can keep your eyes on. She delivers a powerful performance. Its also a very well written movie where the movie can tell its story and not be cheesy, stupid or confusing. Its very smart. The movie takes many twists and turns, and some of the twists are flat out brilliant. As the movie goes on it gets more and more complex, and more and more captivating. This is a movie that had me captivated from the very beginning to the very end. Its brilliantly acted, smart and thrilling. Its better than anything out now that's not an Oscar movie. it was a great way to start off my year.
