Review of Predator 2 (1990) by Anthony M — 09 Jun 2010
Predator 2 does stand as one of the worst sequels that I have personally ever seen. The film is fairly devoid of anything that made the original even remotely entertaining. My problem with Predator 2 is that, it tries to be something it isn't. A serious film. What I liked so much about the original Predator is that it new it was cheesy, if a little camp and full of action and the main aspect, FUN! This was just properly uninteresting.
Predator 2 sets the alien man-killing machine in a suburban, city like landscape instead of a jungle like the original. It drops the Predator straight into a crime flick and that's the films most obvious mistake. As we see drug busts, we see Predator cleaning up the streets much to the dismay of Mike Harrigan (Danny Glover) and his team.
The second mistake is obviously, Danny Glover. His performance was lets face it, dire and well, completely worthy of this film. The supporting cast were also fairly bad, with some awful humour and rigid performances made this at times, cringe worthy and unlike the original, all of the performances suffered from the actors taking the film too seriously. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the rest of the cast from Predator were so over-the-top cheesy than it was entertaining.
I really don't want to right much more on this, overall...not a very entertaining film. Seeing people get blown up or skinned by the Predator is reasonably entertaining but this film should never have been made. Poor film and one I know I won't ever watch again, hopefully.
