Review of Predator 2 (1990) by James R — 07 Sep 2018
Definitely a step back from the original Predator (1987). This movie takes place in 1997 Los Angeles and centers around a LAPD officer named Mike Harrigan (Danny Glover). During an intense gang war between Jamaicans and Colombians the Predator species has arrived attracted by the heat and violence of it all.
After a string of grisly murders a special team led by Peter Keyes (Gary Busey) arrived to take over the investigation. Ticked off by this Harrigan along with his team begin to realize that there is definitely more going on here than they originally thought.
I will say although this one runs about 20 minutes too long and Danny Glover just doesn't have the charisma as Arnold it works on some levels. First off it does give us more expansion on the Predator lore.
It introduces more gadgets that become a main stay and also shows off that perhaps this universe the the Alien universe are a bit more connected than it first seems. The film is extremely dated and has some really over the top moments that just don't work for me.
The movies plot seems to seemingly drop off 30 minutes before the movie ends and we get a much overused fight scene between Harrigan and the Predator that just goes on too long. Gary Busey's character of Keyes just doesn't branch off the way it should have.
I feel like they cut a lot more of his scenes out. He just comes off as a guy doing his job that doesn't quite get along with Harrigan, but then seemingly out of nowhere flips the switch. Overall, a step back from the last film.
It is unique because the jungle now is the "concrete jungle," but this one is just way too 90's for me (in that bad sort of way).
