Review of Predator 2 (1990) by Cook R — 30 Aug 2018
I guess I am a cult of one on this movie. It is my favorite of all the Predator movies. Nice well done practical effects, a story that is consistent and believable in the universe created, with plausible exciting action. It also has the introduction of the Predator vs Alien series with the showing of an Alien trophy skull in the background of one scene in the Predator ship. This movie actually sets up much of the lore and fiction that is to be used in later Predator films.
When people say that Black Panther was the first Black Super Hero, I say no that honor should go to Danny Glover in this movie. As near as I can tell this was one of the first movies that was carried by a black lead which wasn't a black exploitation film or the movies was specifically about the main character being black. AKA Sidney Poitier in Guess Who's coming to dinner or In the Heat of the night. This part could have been played by any Good Actor. The character was just a good character. Not a side kick AKA.
Lethal Weapon or a good black character, just a good character. I think it is similar to Sigourney Weaver in Alien where the lead character could have been male or female and was not based on gender. ( I will leave out Night of the Living Dead in this list because it was not a major Holly Wood Production, though the lead character was black and does have many of the same attributes I have listed above.).
In short, I think that people should take another look at this movie, While it is not a Die Hard or a Terminator II, it is still good solid film making and story telling. I take it out ever so often and just enjoy myself. Maybe you will too.
