Review of Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire (2009) by Paul W — 27 May 2011
I have put off watching this film for many months, assuming it would be tough, tough viewing. So how amazing to be confronted with the miraculously uplifting story of Precious, mentally and physically abused by mother, and whom we learn within the first few minutes is pregnant for the second time by her own father.
Rather than dwelling on the horrors of abuse, we enter precious's head and join her in flights of fancy as she imagines glitzy gala ceremonies, beautiful soul music, family christmases. Rather than shying away from difficult material, these fantasy scenes give us a huge sense of empathy with Precious - the message coming through that no-ones life, no matter how relentlessly awful, is without hope.
No wiser words were ever spoken than these: "Every journey begins with a single footstep".
