Review of Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire (2009) by Mimi S — 07 Nov 2012
Grade: B-.
Precious is a decent movie, but I found that it was another one of those typical moving stories about an underclass hero. This film was a bit too grim and I just felt I didn't really connect with it as much as I have with other films of a similar genre. Precious (played by Gabourey Sidibe) is about a morbidly obese sixteen-year-old who is pregnant with her second child and comes from an abusive home. Her mother constantly abuses her physically and verbally, telling her that she's worthless. Precious gets sent to centre for girls who are drop out, to continue their education. There Precious finds trust and builds a bond with her teacher (Paula Patton). I did think that the film was very moving with some fairly decent performances. I think this film is good in that it raises awareness about sexual abuse and abusive families. However I found this film a bit too depressing and morbid for my liking. I don't think I would watch it again. If you like uplifting stories, this one is for you.
