Review of Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire (2009) by Cherie P — 29 Aug 2013
Overall I thought the story that was portrayed in Precious was heartbreaking and moved me quickly through many emotions from anger to sympathy to compassion to frustration. The movie absolutely touched a nerve and hit close to home through the racial and cultural themes that were presented throughout the film.
I understand that the Precious story is unique, but it is also a story where the cultural issues exist and manifest themselves everyday across the United States. The accepted despondency of Precious is that today we live in a world where a lot of the themes of this story are playing out in our own backyards and there is no clear solution in sight anytime soon.
It is a sad story to see what has happened to our country where children are abused and thrown to the wolves, and there is a real lack of any support for the majority of these kids. There is no doubt that the courage that was presented by Precious throughout her life and the obstacles she faced were inspiring, I could only relate to them at a level of disappointment for our country and encouragement for the few that can break out of the poverty and fight the constant battles of their lives.
Yes, this is inspiring, but it is also extremely depressing because I know for every Precious, there are thousands of others that can't find their way out. I had real mixed emotions after I saw the film and I went to bed to sleep off the depressed feelings and sorrow.
