Review of Powder Blue (2009) by Roxanne R — 09 Jul 2009
When I was at Blockbusters looking at movies trying to decide what to rent, I came across this one and my intuition told me I should rent it. I was right on the money! Its a very good film but depressing so let me stress that you need to be in a certain mood to enjoy this movie or better yet- to learn from it, whether you are going through similar circumstances or to be thankful for not being in the shoes of these characters.
Several Los Angeles residents meet on Christmas Eve through chance, tragedy and divine intervention. Patrick Swayze plays the sleazy owner of the strip club where Jessica Biel's character dances. Eddie Redmayne portrays a mortician who falls in love with Biel's character. Kris Kristofferson plays the head of a corporate crime organization who tries to convince his former employee (Ray Liotta) not to seek vengeance on his former co-workers. Furthermore Liotta has his days numbered...you will find out what I mean..
Forest Whitaker, who also serves as a producer on the film, as a suicidal ex-priest. Grieving the death of his wife and blaming himself for the auto accident he had where she perished. He has no reason to keep on living until he meets Alejandro Romero's character- a transvestite prostitute who shares an unexpected bond with the priest. This character gives the ex-priest some of the best advice about love: "open your heart"....
I love this type of movie where different characters meet through chance or divine intervention and give each other help/guidance in life and to overcome life's obstacles..the movie has a bittersweet ending. I highly recommend it and have added it to my private collection.
