Review of Postcards from the Edge (1990) by Arif S — 26 Jan 2009
Carrie Fischer lived an extremely odd life. I never read this book, but this film gives you a pretty interesting sense of what Hollywood is like. Though there's a lot of drama and intense and unsettling moments, all in all it's a pretty lighthearted movie, and it's a good one to see when you're down, as there's a lot of stuff in here about life.
Mike Nichols is a talented director, in the sense that he can make all kinds of different movies, and no matter what the type, they're usually pretty damn good. Keep in mind, this is the guy who directed "The Graduate," whch was so blatantly different from this movie, yet both of them are very good films.
Meryl Streep, as usual, never ceases to amaze. This is a very layered performance on her part. The entire supporting cast was extremely good (There are some five second cameos that also deserve a lot of recognition, for instance, Annette Bening) and it ends in a really interesting and heartwarming way.
Reccomended.
