Review of Post Grad (2009) by Steve S — 17 Jan 2010
** (out of four).
Something could have been made out of this subject. It could have been a biting satire about the times we live in and the difficulties for those who have just graduated. But the kid gloves are definitely on and "Post Grad" is simply a overly sweet romantic comedy that is as predictable as it is bland.
Alexis Bledel has just graduated from college and hopes to walk right into her dream job. But, when that doesn't happen she moves back home with her wacky parents (Michael Keaton, Jane Lynch) and starts flirtying with the hunky next door neighbor (Rodrigo Santoro), despite the fact that her Best friend (Zach Gilford) has been in love with her since they were kids.
Though the film says it is about someone who can't find work after graduation, there is no struggle in her unemployment. The realities of such a situation never hits home. Things like: How will she pay off her student loans?, or how the economy could strand her unemployed for quite sometime. These issues never arise. Instead she does nearly nothing and things fall into place.
