Review of Porridge (1979) by Mal M — 14 Jul 2007
Ronnie Barker comes to big screen in 'Porridge'', an offshoot of the popular TV sitcom.
Fletcher (Barker) is still in prison along with his cellmate Dogbar (Richard Beckinsdale), when letcher is roped into managing a prison fotball team.
During the big match, an escape is made by a fellow prisoner which fletcher and Dogbar accidentally get swept up in and find themselves, unintentionally, escaped from jail!
Ronnie Barker is great as he always was in the role of Fletcher. the film follows the TV sitcom perfectly with all the old cast returning.
It seems like an extended episode, however without the canned laughter which, in the TV sitcom reminded you to laugh, many of the jokes pass you by... but not all of them.
Although this film is not brilliant, you can't help but love it as Ronnie Barker could make someone lvoe anything!
It is a great tribute to the TV show and well worth a watch if you are a 'Porridge' fan.
A true classic that Ronnie Barker should have been very proud of.
