Review of Ponyo (2008) by D.s. — 27 Aug 2009
I have been a long time fan of Miazaki's work but I must say this was definitely one of his lesser works and therefore I am truly surprised that it was rated higher by critics than princess mononoke and some other of his works.
The script went downhill steeply from the beginning to the end and often times left me disgusted or embarrased. Where the movie won though, was the amazing visuals and story. While the visuals were some of Miazaki's best work, the story was often very touching as well as the statements it made.
Overall it was a worthwhile experience but I must say that Miazaki should stick to older characters, his origional Japanese language and most definitely avoid working with Disney which ultimately led to the unusually dumbed-down nature of the film.
Also, I highly suggest not staying for the credits, as the truly Juvenile English music which plays during the ending credits is excruciatingly nerveracking and out of place.
