Review of Pontypool (2009) by Carlos D — 30 Jul 2009
From the director of The Tracey Fragments comes an ingenious suspense thriller about a virus delivered through radio broadcasts of the english language, making people repeat words over and over, thereby not really saying anything and regressing them to an almost infant state.
Stephen McHattie is golden as the host Grant Mazzy, and the film being set nearly just in the radio station is admirable. It doesn't rely on jump scares of gore to shock the viewer, McDonald uses his talent and creeps me right out through dialogue.
There's a conversation between Mazzy and the "eye in the sky" who is amid all the chaos that is downright disturbing. It all builds to a ridiculously bleak "Canadian" ending that is very reminiscent of another national gem, Last Night.
