Review of Pontypool (2009) by Steven H — 23 Jun 2011
Pontypool. Pontypool. It's one of those words that you end up just repeating out loud. Like Cornholio. Or Nicaragua. Honestly, just say it out loud. Pontypool. It's interesting that the title of the movie slips off the tongue so well, because the movie's premise is based on the English language. And what happens when certain words "infect" people, turning them into gibbering, zombie-like beings. Yeah. You read that right. This is a "zombie" film where the infection lies in words. I know that sounds ludicrous, but that's what you're working with here. While far from perfect, the movie gains points for having the balls to roll with this concept and some scenes are pretty damn effective. There's something about watching a person talk, then pause, then start spouting gibberish in an unconsious stream. Freaks me out, man. And the movie is a blazing showcase for Stephen McHattie. He frickin rules as the radio DJ who starts getting calls about some strange happenings going on in the town of Pontypool. Pontypool. Dammit! It's hard not to say it again. Pontypool. Pontypool. Pontypool.
Note: On June 24, 2011, Steven Honeycutt was seen walking around Greensboro, NC in an apparent state of confusion. He kept repeating the word Pontypool. And sometimes interjected it with Nicaragua.
