Pontypool is, by definition, a horror film. But in my opinion, it plays out a lot like a cerebral pyschological thriller. There is very little in the way of gore or on screen violence, in fact most of what happens outside of the radio station that the film is shot in is left to the viewers imagination as it is described by other characters off screen.

The plot isn't always clear and you'll find yourself wondering where the movie is going, but the uniqueness of the story will keep you invested. The performances are also fairly good for a 'horror' film, and it certainly opened my eyes to Stephen Mchattie, who I have since seen in many small roles.

This film does feel a bit on the slow side, but does generate a decent amount of tension. As long as you buy into the theory that what you don't see is more frightening than what you do see. While I really did like this film, I can't say that I found it terrifying, or even all that intense.

Perhaps I have just become too desensitized to horror now. Definately recommended to those that enjoy more artsy or cerebral genre films. Gorehounds and conventional horror fans will likely be bored with this, but I certainly would recommend checking this out if you have anything more than a passing interest.

You never know, you just might like it.
