Review of Pontypool (2009) by Philip S — 02 Dec 2012
Starts off well. Stephen McHattie is well-cast as the grizzled radio DJ banished to the small town of Pontypool where bus cancellations and bulletins from the fake traffic copter are the big news. That is, until the town is taken over by a bizarre virus, leading ordinary citizens to commit horrific acts.
Georgina Reilly is also watchable as the young, wide-eye sound engineer. Can't say I was blown away by Lisa Houle in the role of producer Sydney Briar, though. She seemed to be an undefined character, falling between the cracks.
The film is clearly low-budget, set almost entirely in a church basement, but for the most part it works, adding to the sense of being cut off from the world and unsure if the horrific stories are true.
The film goes completely off the rails though when the nature of the virus is revealed. Yeah... not so much. Decent build-up, awful pay-off. Too bad. Could have been a cool flick.
